In September 2023, a devastating earthquake struck the Atlas Mountains, causing a humanitarian catastrophe of vast proportions.
The quake resulted in 3,000 deaths and over 5,500 injuries, while entire villages were leveled. Local communities, already vulnerable, saw their homes and livelihoods destroyed, leaving thousands without safe shelter and access to essential services.
In response to this tragedy, last April, Bambini nel Deserto organized an expedition to provide aid to the survivors. During this mission, a submersible pump was installed to ensure access to drinking water in one of the camps set up for the displaced. In addition, essential food supplies were delivered to support the families affected by the earthquake, seeking to alleviate at least part of the suffering of these communities.
Despite the initial efforts, the economic situation in the Atlas Mountains remains extremely precarious. The earthquake has annihilated the fragile local economy, leaving many families in critical conditions. The lack of financial resources prevents many parents from even buying the educational materials necessary to ensure their children have access to education. Without the necessary support, the future of these children remains uncertain and compromised.
To address this educational emergency, Bambini nel Deserto has planned a new expedition for September 2024. The goal is to deliver educational materials to the container schools set up by the government, thus allowing the children to continue their studies despite the difficulties. This mission will not only provide essential educational tools but also represent a message of hope and solidarity for the affected families.
