The world is facing political turmoil, economic slowdown, rising inequalities, and an environmental crisis. This puts at risk our promise to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. Climate change and conflicts are worsening the situation, endangering our progress. Currently, 309 million people in 72 countries suffer from chronic hunger, and 2.2 billion lack access to safe water. The United Nations announced that forced displacement rose to 120 million in May 2024. Despite the uncertainty, there is hope. Our collective actions can build a better and sustainable future. We are at a crucial moment of choice to achieve the 2030 Agenda. We must act now to eliminate poverty, end hunger, combat climate change, promote peaceful societies, and strengthen global partnerships.
Progress Towards 2030 The High-level Political Forum (HLPF) will be held from July 8 to 17, 2024, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. This forum is essential for reviewing progress on the 17 SDGs and raising our ambitions for sustainable development by 2030. The High-Level Segment (HLS) of ECOSOC 2024 will take place from July 15 to 18. Thirty-seven countries will present their actions to achieve the SDGs. Goals 1, 2, 13, 16, and 17 will be thoroughly reviewed. The Forum will include over 140 side events and exhibitions, including 13 special events on key sectors for achieving the SDGs.
A Call to Action: Building a Sustainable Future Now is the time to act quickly to prevent severe issues caused by conflicts, climate change, poverty, and hunger. We must renew our commitment to solidarity and international cooperation. Better-coordinated efforts are needed to overcome these challenges and develop innovative policies for an inclusive and sustainable future. Developing countries must receive support to build green economies and protect lives from climate impacts. Governments, the private sector, and civil society must collaborate to find innovative solutions. Urgent measures are needed to mobilize large-scale financing and close the development funding gap, estimated at $4.2 trillion annually. Financial commitments from developed countries must be met. Innovative financing mechanisms are essential for achieving the SDGs. The September 2024 Summit for the Future will be a unique opportunity to enhance cooperation, address gaps in global governance, and reaffirm commitment to more effective and inclusive multilateralism. It is time to fulfill our promise to present and future generations. We must act now, and act boldly.
